What to Do?

April 21, 2009

I know times have been tough. Who could fault you for not making a decision to go ahead with a new ERP system, or a major ERP renovation? But is no decision such a safe move after all?

What will the economy do? Well this has been a pretty dreadful economic time. But, it won’t last forever. And, there are already signs of a recovery in a number of sectors. As the economy improves, will you?

What about your competitors? Are you beating them today on product excellence, customer intimacy and operational excellence? And, are you beating them across all product lines and all geographic regions? Do you think they are really standing still?

And you are influenced not just by competitors, but by your suppliers and customers as well. What improvements have they made? And what are their expectations of you? And, if they are not sitting on the fence, how can you?

So, what is not working as well as you would like? Can you not bring products to market fast enough? Do your customers need better Internet access? Could you use a newer system to hire and retain employees?

So, what to do?

If you are doing something, we applaud you. In many cases, the best time to invest is when not investing seems easy.

If you are doing nothing, is that so smart, when those companies who are impacting your competitive position are doing something.

And, if you are on the fence, now is the time to do a little analysis. What could you do? What would it cost? How long would it take to get done? And, what would it matter to your bottom line? (Learn how Opportunity Analyzer™ might help.)

Bottom Line: What to do? Do the math and figure it out. Taking the “do nothing” approach won’t get you fired, but it also won’t get you promoted.
